Energy management for virtual environments turns a corner

According to a paper just published entitled Virtual Machine Power Metering and Provisioning by Aman Kansal, Feng, Zhao, Jie Liu, Microsoft Research, Nupur Kothari, University of Southern California and Arka Bhattacharya, IIT Kharagpur they have now determined a way to measure teh energy consumption of software and machines operating inn the virtual world. In the abstract to the article the authors go on to explain:

Pacnet to Convert Cable Landing Facilities Into World Class Data Centers across Asia

In a strategic move to meet growing market demands for data center co-location, managed hosting and value-added services in Asia Pacific, Pacnet today announced plans to convert its Cable Landing facilities across key markets in the region into Data Landing Stations (DLSNew) and ‘fibered’ state-of-the-art data centers.

“Over the past few years, we have seen exponential growth in the demand for data center hosting services and customized applications,” said Bill Barney, Chief Executive Officer, Pacnet. “Yet, the cost of power, real estate, maintenance and connectivity makes it challenging for existing players to upgrade and new players to enter into the data center space. Pacnet’s cable landing facilities across Asia are equipped with massive power, space and capacity, therefore, it is a natural step for us to move forward in building DLS facilities to support immediate demands in the marketplace.”

Creating a Greener Data Center

Many data centers cost more to build and power than the IT services they support, so in a prss release Microsoft explains how it is working towards data centers more efficient:

It wasn’t long ago that corporations gave little thought to the energy consumed by data centers – those warehouses of humming computer servers that today drive retail commerce, manage payrolls, forward e-mails and much more.
