Reciprocal Recognition Agreement between the CIWEM and the HKIE

E-mail Print

In a special edition newsletter issued in June 2009 the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) stated that the organization and all members in Hong Kong were delighted as the long awaited Reciprocal Recognition Agreement (RRA) between the CIWEM and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

The President of the CIWEM, Mr Alastair Moseley, and the President of the HKIE, Ir Peter Y Wong took part in a signing ceremony at the HKIE headquarters in the presence of the Director of International Development of the CIWEM, Mr Paul Horton, Vice President of the HKIE, Ir Dr Andrew K C Chan, and the local committee members from both institutions. According to the newsletter, the signing of the RRA signifies the significant relationship between the CIWEM and the HKIE, and that both institutions and their members will be working further closely in the upcoming future. The RRA will allow members from the HKIE in the Environmental, Civil, Mechanical, and Chemical Engineering Disciplines to be recognised by the CIWEM, and vice versa, as long as the requirements set out in the RRA are met.

This in crease in recognition of CIWEM qualifications is a step towards their goal of membership being a recruitment pre-requisite in the government of water and environmental personnel having requested that the Corporate Membership of our Institution should be accepted by the HKSAR Government as one of the approved qualifications for professionals recruited to work in the environmental field within the Government dating back to 2004.

By this RRA, the CIWEM and the HKIE establish reciprocal recognition of requirements for members of the CIWEM who are Chartered Engineers (which must be obtained through professional review including interview) and the members of the HKIE in the Chemical, Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering Disciplines, and agree that members of each organisation will be accorded corresponding membership of the other on receipt of an acceptable application. The CIWEM HK is preparing the detailed definition of the RRA for the relevant members of CIWEM who are eligible.  For details please contact the CIWEM HK by email at: ciwemhk@hongkong.com or by post at P.O. Box 4258, General Post Office, Hong Kong.  The updated information on the RRA will also be posted on the CIWEM HK webpage at: www.ciwem.org/branches/hong_kong/
