The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) have signed a memorandum of understanding with DuPont, starting a partnership that aims to foster the design and certification of green buildings in India. R.K. Pachauri, Director-General of TERI and Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Thomas F. Schuler, Vice President and General Manager DuPont, met at the Talking Tomorrow lecture series organised by TERI Business Council for Sustainable Development in India (BCSD India).
Pachari noted that green building technology is poised provide business opportunities across India, with Mili Majumdar, head of TERI's GRIHA project, concurring: "Energy efficiency in buildings is very crucial in the Indian context since the construction sector is growing at a very fast pace." The Green Rating System for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) is endorsed by the Indian government as its national building rating system.
One of the main barriers to the adoption of green technology is cost, said Schuler, adding that he believed a six to seven percent premium for green construction was the biggest concern for developers. RFP
