After After 14 years of developing its own green building communities and structures one of India's leading green developers has launched a green idea lab to offer green building consultancy services externally. Having developed nothing but green buildngs since commencing operations, head of innovation at the centre Mr. S. K. Chatterjee, who is the Head of Innovations for Green Idea Lab from BCIL believes the company is uniquely placed to consult for other developers.
The decision to offer the services sprung through demand, he continued, "for hte last two to three years people have been asking us how to make a project green". BCIL generally take a two pronged approach to producing a green building - first the consultants look at the materials used to building the building and the embodied energy or resouces that they contain. Next the systems within the building are designed to further conserve energy. "we normally get a good number of LEED points even if we have not applied for it" he said.
However often the developer will not try for a LEED rating saying that often what is referred to as LEED in india is simply a project built with sustainability principles in mind. Chattergee says that hte building industry in india is "quite disorganized" and there are few standardised processes which makes green building procurement a chalenge. the BCIL team have worked on numerous developments over the developer's 14 year history and as such are well placed to spread their tips accross the subcontinent and beyond.
