The first executive desktop video-conferencing system to offer high definition (HD) voice, video and content sharing is now available on the market. Polycom Inc., the " unified collaboration solutions" manufacturer announced the release of the HDX4000 series on 2 October. The device is the latest leap in video conferencing and internet protocol (IP) communication systems, which are changing the way the modern workplace is shaped.

Speaking at the Office Space Asia 2007 conference, John Bowden, Regional Manager, Workplace Solutions, Cisco Systems (HK), described how technology has enabled work to be done over greater and greater distances. In one extreme example, the personal assistant to one U.S. based CISCO executive relocated thousands of miles away, but is still able to interact with colleagues from her remote position using the latest technology.

High definition systems achieve previously unattainable levels of image and audio quality. The new system incorporates a HD display, camera, microphone, speakers and an integrated keypad similar to a telephone. Besides offering enhanced visual quality video-connection for calls, HD document cameras can also be used to accurately show complicated content such as architectural drawings or fabrics. RFP
